Vancouver Innovator MindfulGarden Targets Taiwan as Gateway to Asia-Pacific
The bio-feedback system is designed not only for managing acute delirium but also for addressing other agitated behaviors associated with major neurocognitive disorders.
The challenge of an aging global population—and the accompanying surge in neurocognitive disorders—has evolved beyond a medical issue into a full-scale crisis for healthcare systems worldwide. Positioned at the crossroads of technology and patient care, MindfulGarden, a Canadian digital health startup, is embracing an ambitious “Asia-first” strategy, with Taiwan as a critical gateway to the region.
Co-founded by veteran digital innovators Catherine Winckler and Mark Ross, MindfulGarden’s mission was born from personal tragedy: the death of Catherine’s 77-year-old mother, who suffered from undiagnosed delirium following elective hip surgery. Delirium—an acute medical emergency of the brain—is frequently mishandled in older patients, often exacerbated by the use of antipsychotics and physical restraints that can triple the cost of care, worsen patient outcomes, and trigger permanent cognitive decline.
Research underscores the urgency: patients with delirium experience three times longer hospital stays, triple the mortality rate, and up to nine times the risk of future cognitive impairment, including early-onset dementia.
“We witnessed how transformative digital, sensor-based technologies had become in entertainment,” Catherine recalled. “Then a nurse asked us a powerful question: What if you brought those same interactive technologies into healthcare?”
The Digital Hug: Biofeedback for Brain Health
MindfulGarden is the result: a clinically validated, effective biofeedback platform designed to manage agitation and aggressive behaviors associated with neurocognitive disorders, beginning with delirium. The technology is elegant in its simplicity and designed as a tool of first reach for frontline nursing staff, effectively acting as a “digital hug” that distracts, engages, and de-escalates agitation levels.
Mark described the product as “the video game that the patient doesn’t even know their body is playing.”
The core mechanism is non-contact, and no personally identifiable data is collected:
Input: Non-contact sensors collect patient inputs like vocalization and motion, and later vital signs, acting as proxies for agitation.
Algorithm: This input is fed through a content generation algorithm.
Output: The patient’s current level of agitation is mirrored back in a layered, interactive audiovisual experience based in nature – clinically proven to distract, engage, and de-escalate behaviors.
Immediate and Proven Impact
In MindfulGarden’s foundational clinical study, the intervention was shown to quickly de-escalate agitation, resulting in a 26% reduction in the use of as-needed antipsychotics (PRN). Patients who responded typically did so within minutes, with the benefit lasting throughout the four-hour exposure period. This makes the product a vital “action layer” that can be deployed at first signs of delirium, or the moment a predictive algorithm identifies a high-risk patient, preventing the need for later-stage drug use.
Beyond the clinical results, the product’s value is also measured in its economic and practical effect on healthcare delivery. Mark noted that based on their foundational study data, the independent Institute of Health Economics estimated potential savings on the use of MindfulGarden in an average Canadian tertiary care ICU would be approximately C$1.7 million (US$1.2 million) per year.
For the nursing staff, MindfulGarden serves as a crucial tool to combat burnout and improve direct patient care. As one nurse told the co-founders, “If you can give me something that helps me make it through my shift, you will have my buy-in.”
The system is intended for use not just for acute delirium, but also for other agitated behaviors associated with major neurocognitive disorders. Additionally, a built-in feature uses a water lily graphic to guide breath work, assisting respiratory therapists in clearing anesthetics from patients’ lungs—a major factor in post-operative delirium. The product is packaged as a mobile behavioral “crash cart,” ready to follow the patient from pre-surgery through post-discharge, with a goal of “sending patients home brain healthy.”
Taiwan: The Crucial Springboard
While North America is their backyard, MindfulGarden’s co-founders confirmed their commitment to an “Asia-first” market expansion, stating they have been “very bullish on Taiwan since the beginning.”
This strategy is heavily influenced by their head of product, Michael Lee, a Taiwanese national who pointed out that by 2025, over 20% of Taiwan’s market will be aged 65 and over. “Taiwan makes a lot of sense because of how easy it is to get to places, it’s a good market for Canada, and the advanced state of the healthcare system there.”
MindfulGarden sees Taiwan not just as a consumer market, but as a strategic regional hub and a potential manufacturing partner. Its expansion strategy focuses on four core areas:
Market Entry: The company’s immediate goal is to secure a local market entry partner who can act as both a regulatory representative and a full-service distributor, handling installations, software upgrades, and technical support. This essential partner will help MindfulGarden navigate the local healthcare system and establish a footprint quickly among TBD local distributors and agents.
Research and Collaboration: MindfulGarden is actively seeking R&D partners to jointly apply for the Canada-Taiwan Collaborative Industrial R&D funding program (CIIP). A primary objective is to test new product features, such as integrating non-contact vital signs into their biofeedback mechanism. Target institutions for these collaborative efforts include the National Taiwan University Hospital, Taiwan Medical University (Shuangho), Linkou Chang Gung Memorial Hospital, and the Taipei Veterans General Hospital (particularly their Brain Probe Team). Companies that have devoted efforts in Gerontechnology, including Acer, Asustek, Quanta, Wistron, Foxconn, Compal, Qisda, and Seda G-Tech, are also potential partners that MindfulGarden would like to meet in Taipei.
Supply Chain: The firm plans to leverage Taiwan’s world-class hardware manufacturing capabilities. Both Catherine and Mark explicitly stated that there will be opportunities for local hardware production in Taiwan. They confirmed they have already reached out to initial partners like CyberMed Taiwan, but their long-term goal is to build opportunities with local manufacturers to create a more customized, streamlined hardware solution. This strategy aims to leverage the island’s robust supply chain and technological expertise.
Gerontology-Technology Networks: Crucially, MindfulGarden is focused on forging strong ties with leading academic and clinical experts to drive market adoption and future research. Notable figures include Prof. Liang-Kung Chen of the National Yangming Chiaotung University (NYCU) and Prof Yeh-Liang Hsu, President of the Taiwan chapter of the International Society for Gerontechnology. These connections are highly strategic, as they can leverage the fact that the IAGG World Congress of Gerontology and Geriatrics will be held in Taipei in 2028.
MindfulGarden is currently employing a B2B subscription model in North America, bundling hardware and software for roughly US$1,500 per unit per month to simplify procurement. However, they are actively seeking local expertise to adapt this operational expense model to the Taiwanese hospital procurement standards.
For the co-founders, the goal is clear: to scale up quickly through strategic partnerships. “It’s a sizeable market, and we will definitely need partners to scale,” they affirmed, positioning the company at the leading edge of Asia’s digital health future.
