From Courtrooms to Battlefields: How Caseway is Building the Decision-Making Layer for Physical AI
Following its June appearance at InnoVEX, the startup platform of Computex 2026, Caseway AI—a British Columbia-based Canadian startup—is building partnerships across Taiwan’s world-class Information and Communications Technology (ICT) ecosystem. By integrating its decision-support software onto locally manufactured hardware, the company aims to bridge the gap between Taiwan’s manufacturing powerhouse and real-time operational intelligence.
Yet, behind this rapid hardware-software integration lies one of the most unconventional origin stories in the tech sector. Caseway founder Al Vigier spent seven years in the Canadian Army, undergoing pre-selection for Joint Task Force 2 (JTF2), the country’s elite counter-terrorism unit, before a leg injury led to a medical release. A veterans’ vocational rehabilitation program funded his transition to law school. Vigier then practiced family law before moving into technology, founding the lawyer-review platform Clearway and the wellness brand Jusu.
Vigier founded Caseway in September 2024 with an initial focus on legal and compliance AI. The platform was built on a corpus of roughly 11 million Canadian and U.S. court decisions, automating court forms and filings for law firms and making case-law research affordable. Its form-automation product, CaseForm, is sold through MyCase, the practice-management platform owned by 8am, and has paying customers in California. However, the underlying capability—processing millions of disparate data points to assist human operators in making high-stakes decisions—quickly caught the attention of government and defense officials.
Dual-Use Strategy and System Architecture
Following interest from Canadian government and defense buyers, Caseway expanded into dual-use applications, adapting its core framework for defense and critical infrastructure. At the center of Caseway’s technology is Synthium, an architecture engineered to handle millions of data points across highly diverse file formats. Rather than acting as a static, off-the-shelf product,
Synthium functions as a flexible architecture tailored to a client’s specific operational environment. It is designed to aggregate acoustic and sonar data, full-motion video, radar and RF tracks, text and imagery into a single decision layer.
How Synthium Works: Pattern Matching, Edge Processing, and Human Control
The core engine relies on historical pattern matching and outcome correlation. Rather than depending on hand-coded rules written for one domain, Synthium analyzes historic datasets to learn what constitutes a correct decision versus an incorrect one.
Legal & Judicial Analysis: The system correlates statutes, evidence and precedent to assemble the authority a lawyer needs and to populate court forms and filings. The output is drafting support for counsel, not for the bench.
Defense & Tactical Operations: In fast-moving environments, Synthium evaluates live sensor data against historical movement patterns to help an operator distinguish a school of fish from a moored mine, or a friendly drone from a hostile one, and to show the reasoning behind that recommendation.
Healthcare & Banking: The platform is designed to parse thousands of pages of patient history alongside lab work and to compress decades of record-keeping into a preliminary case summary for a clinician, who makes the diagnosis. In banking, it is designed to cross-reference legacy databases to flag potential money laundering or automate complex multi-system privacy requests.
Because defense and regulated enterprise clients handle sovereign data, Synthium operates strictly on-premise or at the local edge. It avoids public LLM services to remove third-party data exposure and to reduce hallucination risk, relying instead on private models, custom algorithms, and RAG architectures.
In tactical settings, transmitting data to cloud servers introduces latency delays of several seconds—a delay that anti-drone or naval defense systems cannot afford. Running directly on local hardware allows Synthium to process inputs and recommend actions locally, and to keep operating when internet connections, undersea cables, or satellite links are jammed or disrupted.
Synthium maintains human-in-the-loop control, acting as an automated preparation layer rather than a human replacement. By executing the heavy data synthesis—such as digesting a 5,000-page medical record—it leaves final command authority with human experts. Additionally, Synthium can serve as an independent auditing layer placed on top of existing third-party AI models to evaluate accuracy without relying on self-auditing by original software vendors.
A Co-Development Model for Hardware Partners
Alongside conventional software licensing, Caseway approaches expansion through co-development partnerships. In regions like Taiwan, where world-class hardware manufacturers excel at producing physical boxes, Caseway integrates Synthium directly on top of partner hardware to create unified, intelligent end-products. A prime example is Caseway’s collaboration with MiTAC Advance Technology Corp. on counter-drone systems, where Synthium acts as the real-time decision-making software layer on edge computing hardware. Under this model the hardware partner funds the joint validation build as its market-entry investment, integration is priced as a fixed fee rather than by the hour, and Caseway earns a per-unit software license and a revenue share on the product that results. This ensures long-term alignment, allowing hardware manufacturers to lead sales pitches with integrated software—an approach that opens up new market avenues in North America and Asia.
Scaling Across Industries and Looking Ahead
While defense applications highlight Synthium’s speed under pressure, the underlying architecture is industry-agnostic. The company is developing applications of it for healthcare and banking, and is in discussions with hardware vendors supplying hospitals to integrate AI audit and decision layers.
With CaseForm in commercial use through 8am and a proof-of-concept program under way with MiTAC, Caseway is preparing for its next phase of scaling. The company is certified to ISO/IEC 42001 for AI management systems, holds an NRC IRAP award for defense technology, and runs research partnerships with UBC, SFU, UVic and McGill; its advisory board includes two retired Canadian general officers. With an expanding team, upcoming capital rounds, and growing multi-sector partnerships across North America and Taiwan, Caseway is one of a small group of Canadian firms that the Canadian outlet The Logic named in July 2026 as attempting to build a sovereign alternative to Palantir, at the intersection of hardware, local data, and critical human decisions.
